Advokat, an AI-powered chatbot about worker benefits

When you’re unemployed or unwell, figuring out how to support yourself and those you love can leave you feeling scared and vulnerable. By partnering with Legal Aid At Work, we co-created Advokat: a chatbot helping California workers understand how they can keep their job (and income) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Advokat simplifies the labyrinth of laws on job protection and pay. These are especially for low-wage workers, who are less likely to be able to work from home, and more likely to be considered ‘essential workers’.

Collaborated closely with an AI-developer and the lawyers from Legal Aid At Work to create Advokat, which uses natural language processing to help worker’s understand their rights. Applied human-centered-design process to prioritize the most relevant scenarios affecting workers during COVID. Iterative user research methods informed the content design and plain language.

When you’re dealing with a medical crisis, the last thing you have time for is in-depth research into California’s employment policies. Our goal is to make sure that families get that information they need, without that burden.
