Improving Medicare's website with human-centered design

 UX STRATEGY | UX PLANNING

Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States providing subsidized health coverage to those 65 and older and living with certain health conditions. By developing a Medicare.gov redesign roadmap using human-centered design, we were able to plan out how and when Medicare.gov will be redesigned to be more accessible and user friendly.

We took a phased approach to rolling out the Medicare.gov redesign project. The Medicare.gov redesign plan uses human-centered design, prioritized user and business goals, and agile methodology to help break the project into iterative releases we could implement throughout the year. It helped formed the framework within which we could design, implement and iterate on the redesign project.

Developed a human centered design UX roadmap to ensure the redesign focused on the most important sections to those about to 65 years of age. The plan was embedded within a larger agile design development process, ensuring iterative designs based on user feedback was integrated throughout the process.

Majority of Americans about to turn 65 need to understand the complexity of Medicare health system and how they can access benefits. That’s why we focused our first iteration of the redesign by improving the “Getting Started with Medicare” section of the website. Using top task analysis, content strategy, and plain language best practice, the section was reorganized to better explain Medicare in a step-by-step, accessible way.
